Before and After SOCRATES
Francis M. CORNFORD
Francis Macdonald Cornford was born on February 27, 1874 in Sussex, England. During his youth he distinguished himself as a promising student of Latin and Greek. After his graduation he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1894 to pursue a course of classical studies. Then he became the pupil of Henry Jackson, and they worked together. This has paved the way to his success in later years.
“Cornford was a revolutionary scholar who reinterpreted the origins of Western thought and a masterful translator of and commentator on the later dialogues of Plato. He was also a recognized authority on Greek science, an innovator in the methodology of the history of ideas, an historian and a poet, and an important student of human nature. In his work he achieved a rare combination of profound erudition and sympathetic imagination, which he expressed in an admirable English style that inspired students and colleagues, and enabled him to reach an audience far beyond Cambridge.” [1]
When it comes to his book “Before and After Socrates“, I can definitely say that it’s a must read. If you are interested in philosophy, consuming 120 pages would take you just a couple of hours. As I like taking notes and making cross readings, it took me a full day, but I enjoyed every bit of it. Although, the volume might be deceptive in such technical areas, Cornford provides a clear cut insight into the development of Greek philosophy. Besides, he utilises a plain and simple language on discussing elusive concepts. I guess that might be one of the reasons why his this book had a worldwide appreciation. The version I have read is from 2007, and it was already thirty sixth print. It is translated into many languages and stands as a good source of our understanding of ancient Greek mind, and a delightful introduction to further reading on Greek philosophy, Socrates, and perspective change that Socrates brought.
A book should not be judged by its cover, but in my point of view; in addition to the central role that Socrates play in the history of philosophy, the cover could also emphasise the time span before and after him, and the transformation he brought. His work begins by examining the preSocratic era and philosophers of those times. Then the author depicts Socrates’ mindset and continuous with the Platon, and Aristotle.
What I liked most from this book is, the process that Cornford explains;
“why the life and work of Socrates stand out as marking a turning-point in the history of thought. He shows how Socrates revolutionised the concept of philosophy, converting it from the study of Nature to the study of the human soul, the meaning of right and wrong, and the ends for which we ought to live.“

“Amor Legendi” adlı kitap okuma kulübünün seçtiği bir kitap olan “Sokrates Öncesi ve Sonrası” adlı kitap felsefe ve yabancı dillere ilgi duyanlar için güzel bir tercihti. Birçok kaynakta karşımıza çıkan, klasik metinlerde atıflar içeren Sokrates’in felsefeyi göklerden yeryüzüne indirmesi, üzerinde tartışmaya değer, önemli bir konudur. Benim elimdeki kitap, Francis Macdonald CORNFORD’un, Cambridge University Press’ten çıkan 2007 yılı basımıydı.
Kitabın dili akıcı, okuması keyifliydi. Çapraz okumalarla dolu dolu bir gün geçirerek bitirdim. Ancak sonradan düşünülecek, tartışılacak ve belki de teyit edilmesi gereken birçok soruyla baş başa kalmıştım. Neyse ki Latince sevgim ve Dr. Cengiz ÇEVİK Hocamın hazırladığı eşsiz bir fırsat bizleri bulunmaz bir noktaya getirdi. Prof. Dr. Celal ŞENGÖR’ün katılımıyla gerçekleştirilen toplantıda Cengiz Bey öncelikle F. M. Cornford’u tanıtarak ardından sözü, eserin Türkçe çevirisini Senem ONAN ile birlikte gerçekleştiren Celal Bey’e bıraktı.
YouTube kaydını yukarıya eklediğim toplantıda oldukça keyifli ve bilgilendirici görüşler paylaşıldı. Celal Bey hem çeviriye yönelik hem de genel olarak yöneltilen sorulara müthiş bir anlayışla derinlik kattı. Kendisine, bu fırsatı hazırlayan Cengiz Bey’e ve tüm katılımcılara bu vesileyle teşekkürlerimi sunarım.
Kitabın adından da anlaşılacağı üzere yazar Sokrates’i merkezi bir konuma yerleştirerek ilk olarak ondan önceki dönemin düşünüş yapısını aktarmaktadır. Thales’ten Demokritos’a uzanan İyonya bilimi ve Mısır’da edinilen bilgilerin nasıl bilime dönüştüğü heyecan verici bir yolculuktu. Ardından Sokrates’in yaşamı ve felsefesi, İyonya bilimi ve doğanın keşfiyle başlayan Sokrates öncesi felsefe, detaylı sorular ve açıklamalarla incelenmektedir. Plato, Pythagoras, Xenophon ve Aristoteles ile de felsefi düşüncedeki anlayış sürdürülerek okuyucuya güzel bir başlangıç noktası sunulmaktadır.
Kitapta benim en beğendiğim yerlerden biri; neden Sokrates’in tarihi bağlamda bu tür bir ayrım için önemli bir dönüm noktası teşkil ettiği, kendinden önceki İyonya bilimini neden eleştirdiği ve doğanın anlaşılmasından daha acil ve mühim bir mesele olarak gördüğü insanın doğasının anlaşılması ihtiyacına yapılan vurgudur. Delfi’de yer alan “Kendini Bil” (GR: Gnothi seauton / LA: Nosce te ipsum) ilkesi bu anlamda Sokrates’in yaşamına en uygun vecizedir. Dolayısıyla bu düşünüşün gerekçesini ve gelişimini anlamak, sonraki dönemlerdeki yapıyı ve eleştirileri kavramak için de gereklidir.
